How to Seal a Granite Countertop
Sealing a granite countertop is one of the first maintenance steps a home owner will take once bringing home their new counter.
Some manufacturers will seal the counter prior to installation, if not a homeowner should learn how to seal the countertop before use. The following steps can be helpful in properly sealing your new granite countertop.
1. Sealant can be purchased at a local hardware or home improvement store. Look for a product that is made specifically for sealing granite countertops.
2. After clearing off the counters, be sure to wipe them down with a soft cloth or sponge with water to remove any crumbs, fibers or liquid and let the counter dry.
3. Thoroughly clean the countertop with a purchased stone cleaner, also available at a local hardware or home improvement store.
4. Following the direction of the sealant product, apply the sealant in a thin coat with a soft cloth or brush. Let the product dry for a few minutes before reapplying a second coat. Allow the sealant to dry completely; depending on the brand of sealant, this can take anywhere from three to four hours.
5. Once the counter is dry, you may wish to apply a third coat, making sure to wipe down the counter once again before application.
6. The granite countertop can be resealed again in a year; some manufacturers recommend resealing anywhere between six months to two years.
